But, this post focuses on the Bird Rock community within La Jolla.

 

Bird Rock, La Jolla Real Estate Overview

 

Located in the southwestern corner of La Jolla, Bird Rock offers homes dating back to the 1950s.

Bird Rock bordered by the foothills of Soledad Mountain at its east, and Tourmaline in Pacific Beach.

The name “Bird Rock” derives from a large white rock once shaped like a bird on the shores of the Pacific Ocean frequented by different marine birds.

Oceanfront neighborhoods in Bird Rock include:

  • Calumet Avenue;
  • Chelsea Place;
  • Chelsea Street;
  • Dolphin Place; and
  • Sea Ridge Drive.

 

Bird Rock considered a “laid-back” community offering gorgeous ocean views, classy restaurants, and “quaint” boutiques.

 

Bird Rock History

 

In 1906, subdivided by Michael F. Hall naming it the “Bird Rock City By The Sea”.

In 1927, aviator Charles Lindbergh enjoyed his last meal at the Bird Rock Inn before commencing his famous first solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean to Paris.

In the late 1930s, anticipating World War II, factory workers moving to the area created a housing boom.

During World War II, the Bird Rock Coastal Defense and Anti-Aircraft Training Center and the erection of Camp Matthews created a major military hub for the area. Over a million Marines got their marksmanship training at this center.

Post World War II, the housing boom construction continued. Camp Matthews became the UC San Diego campus.

In 1951, the Bird Rock Elementary School opened to accommodate the influx of new families.

In 2011, the 26th season of the MTV “Real World” filmed in Bird Rock. A 6,800 square-foot home located on Crystal Street and Chelsea Drive featured in the show boasting a large pool and a rooftop tennis court covered by a life-size chess set.

Bird Rock consists of gridded street patterns since the 1950s with recent renovations and new construction.

Also, Bird Rock known for its sandstone cliffs and as the only La Jolla community without sandy beaches for swimming. Yet, it’s a short walk to the popular WindanSea Beach.

You’ll find enchanting homes featuring custom architectural styles near classy restaurants and cafes on La Jolla Boulevard.

Because of the Bird Rock homes closeness to the beaches (two blocks) expect home prices starting at $400,000 for a condo and $1.2 million for a single-family home.

Bird Rock’s Merchant District offers quaint boutiques, world-class restaurants, and laidback eateries. It covers 3 1/2 blocks of La Jolla Boulevard from Camino de la Costa to Midway Avenue.

Yearly community events incorporate:

The Bird Rock Bike Path begins on Hermosa Avenue and enjoys little traffic making it perfect for biking and strolling.

Calumet Park offers picnic tables, benches, and breathtaking views.

La Jolla Hermosa Park on the north end also provides great views.

The Street of Dreams (Camino de la Costa) offers oceanfront mansions with stunning ocean views.

Muirlands Middle School rated a 9 (and 10 for Test Scores) teaching grades 6-8 to around 1,075 students

La Jolla High School rated a 9 (and 10 for College Readiness) teaching grades 9-12 to about 1,150 students.
