The name Coronado means “crowned one” in Spanish. Thus, it bears a nickname of “The Crown City”.
Not until 1885, when Elisha S. Babcock purchased the Coronadas did any development take place. Ideally, a perfect spot to build a luxurious resort hotel called The Hotel del Coronado opened its doors in 1888.
In 1889, John D. Spreckels invested in the hotel’s parent company and in 1892 become the sole owner. He built a grand mansion on Glorietta Boulevard and established a tent city for the workers and tourists. He sold the North Island to the U.S. government in 1917 which built ports for aircraft carriers making the U.S. military the top employer in the area.
In 1967, construction began on a $50 million bridge named in 1970 as the “most beautiful bridge” by the American Institute of Steel Construction.
In 1971, the former tent city became building site for condominium high-rise towers called the Coronado Shores Towers.
