In 1906, the Santa Fe Railway bought the land to plant eucalyptus trees to produce railroad ties. But, the wood was too soft for railroad spikes. So, the railroad developed 6,100 acres as a planned community called “Rancho Santa Fe” in 1922.

Designed by Lilian Rice, one of the first female architects in California, who first built a 12-room house in 1922. It later became the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe. Famous Hollywood stars gathered at the Inn including Errol Lynn, Bing Crosby, and Bette Davis during the 1930s and 1940s.

In 1924, Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford purchased 800 acres in Rancho Santa Fe as an investment.

According to Fodors, the Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club hosted the original Bing Crosby Pro-Am tournaments. It’s known as among the best golf courses in California.

The U.S. 2010 Census showed a population of 3,117. The Niche website estimates a current population of 2,428.

The town covers 6.8 square miles.

The Covenant of Rancho Santa Fe

 

The Covenant of Rancho Santa Fe considered as a very exclusive, desired, and beautiful rural community in America.

The Covenant boasts beautiful rolling landscapes with large lot residential homes (minimum of 2 acres). A private equestrian along with hiking trails run throughout the Covenant.

Also, the closeness to the ocean along with its secure, exclusive, rural community character sets the Covenant apart from most exclusive communities.

Security: A private security patrol force working 24/7 along with the California Highway Patrol and the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department provides sufficient security for the community.
