Here’s some useful facts about the San Diego Country Estates:

San Diego Country Estates Real Estate Planned Community

Raymond A. Watt envisioned the San Diego Country Estates (SDCE) in 1970 by purchasing 3,250 acres in the San Vicente Valley. During that time, Ramona’s population of 5,000 accompanied the three families in the valley.

The planned community fell into place by 1975 with all parcels sold.

Watt’s planned for lots of open space with 1,350 (42%) acres set aside for common areas. Lots became half-acres for around 3,050 single-family homes. Also, 400 condominium units with many amenities including a:

  • Ted Robinson designed 18-hole golf course;
  • Western equestrian center;
  • International equestrian center;
  • Clubhouse with junior Olympic-sized swimming pool, and a restaurant/bar;
  • 28-room guest lodge;
  • Four lighted tennis courts;
  • Family picnic facilities; and
  • Oak shaded park and swimming pool.

Promotion of the SDCE included celebrities live movie stars William Holden and Charlton Heston, and rodeo star Casey Tibbs.

The first “Battle of the Sexes” tennis match occurred here between Bobby Riggs and Margaret Court in 1973. The event televised in seven countries fueled the 1970s tennis rage.

One website describes SDCE resort guests as enjoying “The Good Life”.
